The strategic partnership with EduWeek has worked well for ADESSA. Many of our members exhibited at the event, and a number of other exhibitors showed great interest in the activities of ADESSA. We hope to welcome some of them on board in the near future.
The 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of ADESSA was once again a successful event. Despite protest action, many delegates braved the crowds and met at the premises of Edit Microsystems on Friday, 7 April 2017 to reflect on the past year; others linked in remotely from Johannesburg and Durban. The attendees were thrilled to learn that ADESSA membership nearly doubled since the beginning of 2016 and that the outlook for continued growth is good.
The highligh of the meeting was the address by Mr Henry Kavuma of the DBE who spoke about the progress of e-education in South Africa. Emphasizing the important roll of ADESSA, he said: “The e-education industry, rather than individual companies, must be speaking with one voice to the DBE.” And that is exactly the mission of ADESSA.

The world we live in is changing rapidly, all the time. A young student told me the other day that her final class at university was very insightful: after three years of study the lecturer said that almost everything he taught them is now redundant, so much had changed in the three years they completed their studies.
This emphasizes that life-long learning is the only way to sustain proficient learning today. Knowledge and information is exploding across the globe. Never before has it been more important to train and develop accurate ways to facilitate the process of reading with comprehension. Even more, we need innovative ways to teach students how to use current knowledge as a basis from which to create new knowledge.
Illiteracy is a leading cause of delinquency, poverty, frustration and depression, resulting in a loss in productivity and general reduction in lifestyles and wellness amongst people in all communities. The current economic situation has made this phenomenon even worse. High-performance environments (work, learning and sport) are here to stay and people require effective solutions, which will give them the opportunity to overcome in life and to contribute by creating a healthy society.
We have to face the reality that education is experiencing real challenges: we are training for a future we do not even see and we need to train students for jobs that does not exist in our current framework of mind.

It is amazing to see what ADESSA members get up to!
Sangari South Africa, the provider of learning solutions, has launched the ‘F1 in Schools Technology Challenge’ 2016 race season in its search for a team to represent South Africa at the World Finals in 2017. The aim is for learners, between the ages of 11 and 19, to design, manufacture and race their own miniature Formula One cars.
The F1 in Schools Technology Challenge has become well-known worldwide as an educational competition that actively promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). There are over 44 countries participating, making it a prestigious and fun event where the value of learning is showing exceptional results.
“Registration for the programme is free for all schools in South Africa,” said Bez Sangari, MD of Sangari South Africa. “The F1 competition focuses on blended learning through a cross curricula approach where learners physically apply what is learnt in the classroom. The true value lies in how learners take ownership of their own learning.”
The teams wishing to enter the official competitions on regional, provincial, national or international level would have to source sponsorships as these have different entry costs. Teams would also need to source sponsorship for manufacturing their F1 cars.

The ADESSA voice is becoming stronger by the day, with more companies signing up as members. One of the steps of re-imagining the organization was a review of this website, as well as the creation of a new logo.
One of our members, Fuel Online, kindly did the redesign of the website layout and logo for us.
Three hundred teachers attended a one- day conference on Friday, 15 July 2016, organized by the Western Cape Educatioin Department to encourage the use of technology.
On Monday, 18 July 2016 two hundred and twenty subject advisors and other officials of the Westen Cape attended a similar conference. The CEO of ADESSA delivered the keynote address, entitiled “Transforming Education through ICT”.
The WCED invited a number of companies to exhibit during the two conference days, and most of them are ADESSA members. It is great to see how the relationship between ADESSA and the different education departments is being strenghtended.
The ADESSA AGM took place on 7 April 2016 in Cape Town. The event was hosted by one of the members, Oxford University Press.
The turnout was the biggest ever experienced at an AGM meeting and the attendees were glued to their seats as Mr Brian Schreuder, DDG of the Western Cape Education Department explained the meaning and implications of the “Game Changer” policy of the province.
Two new members were elected to join the ADESSA committee and we welcome Vivian Naidoo of MIB and Craig of Fuelonline to the committee.
Formed in 2003, the Associated Distributors of Educational Supplies in Southern Africa, is a body representing educational suppliers in their dealings with government departments, educational institutions and other interested parties. It is an independent organisation, and is funded by subscriptions from member companies. There are currently over 40 companies that are members of ADESSA.
ADESSA as an association promotes professionalism amongst its members, and aims to deliver an edge in education. It also offers member companies one powerful unified voice in dealings with educational institutions and other organisations.
