The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies at Stellenbosch University created an off-grid media lab for Mugoidwa Secondary School, in Vhembe district, Limpopo Province, South Africa.
The solution consists of 2 x 12m upcycled containers joined seamlessly to create a unified learning environment. The aim of this off-grid media lab is to help bridge the gap between those who have access to knowledge and those that don’t, in a sustainable manner. The idea is to not be a financial or security burden on the school, but rather help save money through renewable energy and giving access to the realm of knowledge that they wouldn’t have otherwise not received. This will enable learners to make informed decisions about their future – knowledge is power.
The renewable and sustainable energy team at the Stellenbosch University explored many brands and they found that Clevertouch had the best cross-platform integration, ease of use, and well-thought-out UX (user experience) that they come across. As well as seamless integration with Chromebooks.

Fairlands Laerskool, is a government primary school based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Under the guidance of the SGB and IT manager they implemented CLEVERTOUCH displays into their classrooms in 2019.
The school is currently using the CLEVERTOUCH V Series Displays in their Maths and Science classrooms.
The classrooms had a mixture of interactive whiteboards and standard whiteboards. The cost of the projector globes and the annual license fees of the software being used, as well as the cost of teacher laptops, became too expensive to maintain. Hence, they looked for an alternative solution.
“We chose CLEVERTOUCH because it is an all-in-one solution. With the built in android device, teachers do not require anything else to teach. Teachers are able to walk into the classroom and teach immediately. We researched many other solutions and this was the most cost effective and easiest to use solution,” says Francois Pienaar, IT Manager.

Mrs Zaskia Kuun, Deputy Principal of Monte Vista Primary School, says that the use of Clevertouch boards, sourced from IAS-AV, has been “a positive experience”.
Ms Kuun says: “We purchased the Clevertouch boards in 2018. Since then it has been embraced by all educators; we currently have 29 Interactive screens. Our learners are very visual and grow up knowing how to use screens (tablets, phones) and technology. This is a familiar medium for them and engages them in lessons. The end goal for every educational institution should always be to maintain high academic standards and to prepare learners for the ‘real’ world. When they leave the school they should be able to face challenges with a framework of familiar knowledge. Our learners are being exposed to technology from grade 1 and feel comfortable in using this medium on a daily basis. We do not want to bring tablets into the classroom as we feel that the board provides a good balance between being exposed to technology and still learning valuable skills like writing, planning, spatial awareness and creativity. The support and after sales service that we have had has been phenomenal. The one learner called it a ‘tablet on steroids’. The fact that all the software and training is free, there are no projector globes that needed to be replaced or additional teacher laptops to be procured, it meant that the SGB would not need to find additional funding. The Clevertouch Screen is an all-in-one teaching device, that is simple to use.”
